Namaste, dear friends. I am Abhisshek Om Chakravarty, and for over ten years, I've had the privilege of guiding more than 500 individuals through their life's challenges. Today, I want to share some valuable insights about stress and resilience, giving you a glimpse of the transformative journey we'll explore more deeply in my upcoming book.
The Hidden Nature of Stress in Modern Life
Let me share a story about Sanjana, a young software professional from Hyderabad who came to me feeling completely overwhelmed. "Sir," she said during our first meeting, "I feel like I'm drowning. Between my job deadlines, family expectations, and my own dreams, I can't seem to catch my breath." Sanjana's story might sound familiar to many of you, as it reflects the complex challenges we face in today's fast-paced world.
Through my years of mentoring, I've observed how stress weaves itself into the fabric of our daily lives, often so subtly that we don't notice until it becomes overwhelming. It's like a pot of milk slowly coming to a boil, and we might see the rising temperature once it's bubbling over.
Understanding Your Body's Stress Response
When we feel stressed, our body goes through very real changes. Think of it like your mobile phone switching to emergency mode when the battery is low. Your heart beats faster, your breathing becomes shallow, and your muscles tense up. This is your body's ancient survival system at work.
I remember working with Manoj, a 36-year-old bank manager, who didn't understand why he felt so tired all the time. His body was constantly in this emergency mode, responding to work pressures and family responsibilities as if they were physical threats. Once we helped him recognise these signals, he could start managing them more effectively.
The Three Faces of Stress
Through my experience helping people from all walks of life, I've identified three main types of stress that affect us:
Daily Stress: This is like the traffic you face on your way to work or the small arguments at home. It comes and goes quickly, but can build up if we don't handle it well.
Cumulative Stress: This builds up over time, like water collecting in a bucket during monsoon. It might come from ongoing work pressure, financial worries, or family issues that don't get resolved.
Deep Emotional Stress: This comes from significant life changes or losses. It needs special care and understanding, just as a deep wound needs proper medical attention.
The Mind-Body Connection
What makes stress particularly challenging is how it affects both our mind and body. , Prabha a 35-year-old teacher I worked with, came to me complaining of constant headaches. Through our sessions, we discovered that her physical symptoms were closely tied to the pressure she felt to be a "perfect" teacher, mother, and wife.
This mind-body connection works both ways: when we calm our minds, our bodies relax, and when we relax our bodies, our minds become more peaceful. This understanding is at the heart of the stress management techniques I teach.
Signs That Stress Is Taking Over
Your body and mind will give you signals when stress is becoming too much. Here are some common signs I've observed in my practice:
Sleep changes: Either sleeping too much or too little
Appetite changes: Losing interest in food or eating more than usual
Mood swings: Feeling irritable or overwhelmed by small things
Physical symptoms: Headaches, stomach problems, or muscle tension
Difficulty concentrating: Finding it hard to focus or remember things
Social withdrawal: Avoiding friends and family
Building Your Resilience Shield
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from difficult situations, challenges, or setbacks. It means staying strong, adapting, and moving forward even when things get tough.
Resilience is like a muscle, and it grows stronger with proper training. Through my work with clients, I've developed a comprehensive approach to building resilience, which I'll share in detail in my upcoming book. For now, let me give you some foundational practices:
Start your day mindfully: Take five minutes each morning to breathe deeply and set your intentions for the day. Rahul, a business owner I worked with, transformed his stress levels simply by starting this morning's practice.
Create healthy boundaries: Learn to say "no" when needed. Remember, saying no to others sometimes means saying yes to yourself.
Nurture your relationships: Strong connections are like anchors during difficult times. Make time for meaningful conversations with family and friends.
Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness you would show a good friend who's going through a tough time.
The Power of Mindfulness in Stress Management
Mindfulness is a powerful tool that I teach all my clients. It's like having a pause button for your mind. Taking even three mindful breaths can help you regain your centre when you feel stressed.
Rajesh, a 27-year-old IT professional, was sceptical about mindfulness at first. "I don't have time for this, sir," he told me. However, after learning to take short mindfulness breaks throughout his day, he worked more efficiently and felt less overwhelmed.
